just finished reading...

Henri Nouwen's The Way of the Heart...

I got it for my birthday and it came on the heels of my thoughts on being and doing... the spiritual disciplines are important...

solitude... silence... prayer...

Here are some thoughts from Nouwen:

"...because our secular milieu offers us so few spiritual disciplines, we have to develop our own. We have, indeed, to fashion our own desert where we can withdraw every day, shake off our compulsions, and dwell in the gentle healing presence of our Lord." (p. 21)

"In solitude our heart of stone can be turned into a heart of flesh,..." (p. 25)

"...the question that must guide all organizing activity in a parish is not how to keep people busy, but to keep them from being so busy that they can no longer hear the voice of God who speaks in silence." (p. 56)

"For us who are so mind-oriented it is of special importance to learn to pray with and from the heart." (p. 73)

"Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me." (p. 85)

This was very timely for me... it really speaks to this idea of being...
