Here are some thoughts I found helpful from Foster's Celebration of Discipline, these come from a chapter on submission:

"In submission we are at last free to value other people"

"The apostle Paul grounds the imperative to the Church to 'count others better than yourselves' [see Rom 14, 1Cor 8] in the submission and self-denial of the Lord for our salvation. 'He... emptied himself, taking the form of a servant'"

"Those who walk in the Spirit... ...know without question that submission is due to the Word that has been given in spiritual authority" (Phil. 2:4-7)

"Nothing can put people into bondage like religion, and nothing in religion has done more to manipulate and destroy people than a deficient teaching on submission"
